This episode explores and reviews the installation process of onshore wind farms. We have managed to put together a step-by-step guide on how exactly these gigantic mysterious structures are transported, assembled, and installed. Big thanks to ERBI, Peikko Group, LM Wind Power, DOLL Fahrzeugbau, GE Europe and, MidAmerican Energy Company for all the amazing informative footage.

We hope you enjoy this review of Wind Turbine Farm Installation!

@Abdullah Alsaif You really didn't get it huh? Turbine blades are not recycable. They have to be remelted and then rebuild. The amount of energy used is larger than what turbines produced. Turbines are easioy destroyed in a large storm. Solar panels doesn't large forever are are inefficient. You all have been tricked by fake craps.

Some people wonder why the first layer of concrete is poured without forms or steel re-enforcement. That first layer (concrete) is an upgrade over the previous base layer of gravel. The base layer is called the mat. As a person that has received basic crane operator instruction. I marvel at the skill of the crane operators and the engineers that design them. Congratulations to all involved. This last 20 years has seen tremendous leaps in capability.

That was an entirely INCORRECT statement. The blades are how the power of the wind is turned into rotational mechanical energy to drive the generator(s) with, via the hub and a transmission system of some sort.

Those are amazing devices. I used to work for a shipyard and we had a facility on the port, and there was a set of three turbine blades lined up on their special trucks waiting for shipment by boat somewhere. If you've ever seen the entrance to the port of Everett you'd be scratching your head at how they got the things in there lol, they're _huge._ Pictures don't do them justice, when you're standing 20 feet away and it's dwarfing you, you'll understand lol.

Fun fact, these are around a cool 4 million apiece including install. Makes you understand the investment when you see a field of 100 of them. That's almost half a billion bucks, it's crazy.

Let's hope that trench is protected in some way inside to prevent it from caving in at the 0:34 point of the video. Otherwise that could end badly for the operator and the guy standing on the ground. The operator is also fairly close to the dropoff to his right if a cave in happened there. Important to be aware of such things, and not always smart to get close to machinery like this.

@piui Also, to be fair, all windmills are not created equal. You put a windmill on the right location, it never stops. Put it at a different location, you might get 50% of that.

    • ted

      8 mesi fa

@piui The research i did gives an approximate 4.5% ROI. Without govt subsidies they probably wouldn't happen. With a lifespan of 20 years, and a break even point of 12-15 years, you are nowhere even close to the figures you presented. Maybe i didn't research enough, and maybe you're an expert, but i have never heard anything close to what you are saying. Maybe I'm flat wrong, idk

@ted Energy return on investment (EROI), on wind-turbines is between 20-50, which means the energy you get from them is 20 times higher than the energy needed to produce and operate them. More recent turbines' EROI is also higher than older models en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_return_on_investment#Wind_turbines

@Noah Prestel Problem is that most renewables don't last "many years", at least not here in Texas where we have hail, tornadoes, 70mph cross winds on nice days, and now, a solid week of near zero temperatures with ice that practically renders renewables USELESS. It presents an engineering problem that they STILL don't have worked out, since wind turbines around here hardly pay for themselves (of course with billions of taxpayer subsidies to the energy companies, they can show on paper that they do, but it doesn't count when we have to pay the government our hard earned tax money just to fund the operation, then pay for it again on our energy bills. So no, I don't believe you're right, because more and more often, you'll find them exploded into tiny pieces all over our country-side. I'm a little more inclined to believe that solar is better than wind, but still the battery problem is still a toxic nightmare, and also hardly a net + to our environment. Natural gas and Nuclear are by far our best options. Face it. The entire reason they're pushing green energy is because certain people stand to make trillions from all the suckers they've fooled into thinking that "man is causing global warming" - Al Gore, the greedy billionaire who gives speeches to stoke people into fear about the climate.

Looking at all of that concrete, steel, hauling, excavating, all of the work involved etc, you might be thinking "jeez. This is clean energy?!?". IDK . I was, so I looked it up. The carbon footprint of wind energy has been estimated to be about 11g per kWh, which isn't nothing but is vastly better than coal or natural gas.

This whole wind energy thing seems like a heavy investment to make that would take a while to pay off with the return on power from it except in some very select areas on Earth. The sheer amount of steel involved is hard to justify financially if you remove all politics from the situation for places that just get normal amounts of wind or less.
